We’re already halfway into 2022, and with various fashion events and plenty of months
behind us, it’s the perfect time to take a step back and identify some of the biggest trends so far. But cutting through the noise isn’t always easy – especially when you can now find someone professing that just about anything is “in” or “out” of fashion on TikTok. That’s why we’ve picked out the top fashion trends of 2022, taking note of the biggest styles from runways, celebrities and popular culture.
Considering we’ve just come out of two years of lockdown joggers and big events for
fashion have restarted, it’s an exciting time for the fashion community. So, without further ado, here are the ten biggest trends.
1 The micro skirt
Ever since the mini skirt first burst onto the scene in the 60s, it’s been in and out of fashion – and after a few years of the midi-skirt reigning supreme, it seems that it’s finally back. And it’s shorter than ever, with many runway models sporting designs that barely cover their private parts.
Time to get those pins out!
2 Color clashing
One of the more daring trends making the rounds, bold colors are everywhere in 2022 –
perhaps as a response to a universal feeling we’ve reached the light at the end of the tunnel. Bright colors and contrasting shades are particularly prevalent, so if there was ever a time to take some risks with your fashion, it’s now.
Throw the rulebook away and combine that pink jumpsuit with an orange jacket, or a green skirt with a yellow crop top.
3 All white
Some trends aren’t for everyone. If you can’t quite stomach the color clashing trend, you may be pleased to know that the exact opposite is also in fashion: All white. There’s something crisp and clean about the color – especially in summer – and it’s always been a firm favorite among minimalists. Why not try an all-white trouser suit, or pair wide-leg white trousers with a trim white top?
The striking look can be beautiful, but it might be one to avoid if you know you can be careless with your food and drink.
4 Stripes
Stripes are one of the most timeless patterns around, and they’re back with a bang.
Whether you go all-out with a colorful stripy jumpsuit or opt for a simple Breton T-shirt, you’re sure to find something that works for you.
The old rule might say that vertical stripes are slimming while horizontal stripes make you look wider, but feel free to play around and see which shapes feel great for you. Styling can make a big difference too, so play about with your layers. Maybe you’ll even opt for diagonal instead.
5 Cut-outs
If you’re ready to show some skin after endless months of hiding behind your joggers and sweatshirt, you’re not alone. Runways recently have been all about adventurous slits and cutaways to allow wearers to put various parts of their body on display, from a glimpse of back flesh to almost the entire stomach.
You can take the trend to different extremes, so you can enjoy the trend without revealing parts of your body you’d rather keep under wraps.
6 Biker jackets
Biker jackets are a wardrobe staple for many fashionistas, and to some extent, they’ve
always been timeless. But now they’re back in a big way, with many labels pushing the style.
The great thing about biker jackets is that they come in a few different styles, so there’s something for everyone – whether that’s a slim-fit jacket to highlight your waist or an oversized, chunkier coat to demonstrate your tough side.
7 Bucket hats
2021 was all about the 90s, and while bucket hats have been on the rise for a while, they’ve now well and truly taken hold. If you’ve headed to any festivals recently, you’re sure to have spotted plenty of them in the wild. Whether you’re nostalgic for the era or want to enjoy the trend for the first time, now is your chance to be the bucket-hat-wearing 90s kid of your
dreams.
Will you choose something bright and bold to showcase your personality, or a more neutral design so your outfit can take center stage? The choice is yours.
8 Y2K
Bucket hats might be bringing back a return to the 90s, but there are some 2000s trends
pushing through too, known by many as a return to Y2K fashion. If you’re ready to go back to the dawning of the twenty-first century, look for butterflies, chiffon, sequins, tinted
sunglasses, and anything in bubblegum pink.
Shows like Euphoria have helped to push this fashion style to the forefront, so for inspiration, look no further.
9 Low-rise
Speaking of Y2K fashion, low-rise jeans are making a comeback, and they’re making such a splash that they deserve their own entry.
It’s fair to say that the reception has been mixed. While the jeans style might not be a
flattering design for everyone (we can’t all be Britney Spears), the daring look can certainly turn heads for those who do it right. Plus, the style makes a change from the high-waisted fits most of the world has been rocking recently.
10 Fringe details
Give your clothes some texture by opting for something with a little fringe. This trend is also surprisingly flattering since fringing details can hide the parts of your body you’d prefer others not to see.
Whether you go all-out with a fringe skirt or opt for more subtle accessories, it’s all in the details. Combine with crochet tops, bohemian-inspired pieces, or stripes for an ultra-trendy look.
On a similar note, clothes with feathering details have also been making waves recently.
Ready to mix things up?
There’s no need to follow trends blindly if you don’t feel they’re right for you, but with such a variety of styles floating around, there’s no reason you shouldn’t find an item that works for you.
